Oven-Fried Drumsticks

Are your children normal? When I was growing up, children ate the drumsticks of the chicken. If we went on a picnic, the whole chicken was cut up and then fried. Today, when most children eat chicken it is in the form of a “nugget,” and they don’t even know that chickens have bones. According to Joel Salatin—Folks, this ain’t normal. Over the last few months I have been reading Joel’s book Folks, this ain’t normal, and I have been totally amazed at the lack of simple knowledge that this generation has. In the early 1900’s every woman knew how to cut up a chicken—for pieces were not sold in the store. I was amazed to read that children who were served chicken legs for lunch at a school cafeteria didn’t know what to do with the “things” inside the meat. Chicken nuggets have no bones—and some of them actually have no chicken! I know families whose children teethed on chicken legs. Yet, in today’s modern houses a drumstick is never bought, but plastic teething rings are. Just think how much more flavor a chicken drumstick has than a plastic teething ring. While this way of life has become the new standard, it doesn’t make it right—or normal. Not all change is good change. So many people today have no idea where their food comes from—and I do not mean what Country, but they literally do not know that chickens lay eggs, that a cow has to give birth in order for it to produce milk, that carrots grow in the ground, and that green beans are hidden inside the leaves of the plant. Most people today are so disconnected from real food—that folks, is just ain’t normal.

Today we can buy cut up pieces of chicken, even though it is cheaper to buy a whole chicken and cut it up ourselves. Yet, there are those people who only like white meat, and those who only like dark meat—so cut up pieces are very convenient. There is one piece though that I have noticed doesn’t sell very fast—the drumstick. So I thought that I would share with you my tried and true, tasty and easy to make recipe for Oven-Fried Drumsticks.

Fried chicken is one of everyone’s favorite comfort foods—but we do not always have the time to stand at the stove and cook it. Oven fried chicken is less messy, and gives you time to do other things while it cooks.

Oven-Fried Drumsticks

  • 8 chicken drumsticks

  • 1/4 cup flour——if you are gluten intolerant, use Cassava Flour, it works great!

  • 1 teaspoon salt——I use Pink Himalayan Salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • 1/2 teaspoon curry powder

  • 1 teaspoon Sage

  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme

  • 1/2 cup butter

Heat your oven to 450 F. Melt the butter in a 9 x 13 pan.

Mix all your powders in a large Ziploc bag, or a container that you can tightly seal—I have used a gallon glass jar, or a Tupperware container that can hold all the drumsticks at one time.

Add in your drumsticks and shake around. When completely coated, remove and arrange in your pan.

Bake for 30 minutes, then flip the drumsticks and bake for 15 minutes longer.

These taste good hot with your evening meal, or cold for a quick lunch. You can also make them and take the whole family on a picnic to enjoy the great outdoors.

If you would like to learn more about being “Normal”, I would encourage you to get the book Folk’s, this ain’t normal, by Joel Salatin and you can even do something else that used to be normal—-read it out loud together as a family.
